Basic Computer Hardware & Electronics

electronics_computer_hardware

The ubiquity and importance of electronics and computers makes them essential for our technological fitness. This hands-on series aims to jump-start beginners and demystify electronics and computer technology. As complex electronics may look, they are built from mere 9 basic components: diode, transistor, field effect transistor, photo transistor, LED, quartz crystal, transformer, capacitor and resistor. You will learn their function, and build simple useful circuits. Personal computers will be also presented in an easy functional manner. This are the courses:

PC 101 - Brief Introduction to Personal Computer

PC 101 - How to Build (Assemble) Your Computer

Electronics 101 - Practical Introduction to Electronics

PC 101 - Brief Introduction to Personal Computer

All computers contain four major components, hardware, BIOS (basic input output system), operating system and applications. This course aims to demystify computers and present heuristically the major components and their functionality. You will be presented the 10 major functional hardware components: the central processing unit (CPU), mainboard, random access memory (RAM),  hard disk drive (HDD), video graphics adapter (VGA) card, computer case, monitor, keyboard, mouse. You are going to touch and see each part, and get brief explanation how they work. You will be shown in action different operating systems ( such as GNU/Linux, Unix, Windows, and MacOS), and applications for image processing, video and sound editing, electronics and bio informatics.  During the 2 hour duration of the course you will be offered plenty of opportunity to ask questions and interact. However, you will have the opportunity to attend two more in depth courses - Linux 101 - "Debian GNU/Linux installation and configuration", and "How to build your computer".

  • assembling the computer
  • installing the operating system

The course is open to anyone interested. It is aimed towards people with minimal computers skills, such as using a mouse and keyboard.

If you choose to build your own computer and take it home, you need to contact us one week ahead of the course so we make sure the parts per your specification are at hand at the beginning of the course.
